CHAPTER TEN

CRISTINA LAY IN BED, wishing there was something she could do to feel less like death. Her throat was near parched and as her fingers touched her hair, they stuck in the mass of tangles. She likely looked worse.

What did it matter how she looked in front of Si? She was still going to try and make a match with Lord Jameson, wasn’t she? She’d lost the illusion of love with the man, something she’d hoped to find, but the fact was, after what had happened with Ralston, she needed to marry quickly. It was the only way to be safe from her mother’s schemes.

She attempted to reason the situation out but her thoughts were still fuzzy after the illness. Lord Jameson was clearly interested in courting, while Si avoided society. Lord Jameson was classically handsome, while Si was deliciously brawny. Lord Jameson was hardly ever there, while Si rescued her from a man holding them at gunpoint. Wait. That wasn’t what she’d intended to think.

Her heart sped up in her chest. Si made it beat like that every time he was near.

The door swung open and there he was, filling the entire doorway, with a tray in hand. Cristina had nearly forgotten. Si had held her in his arms as she’d tossed up every last bit of food or drink in her stomach.

“Si,” she whispered, attempting to sit up.

He set down the tray and turned to her. Then, sliding his hands into the crook of her arms, he lifted her into sitting position.

“Don’t forget to leave the door open,” a man called from the hallway.

In response, Si swiveled around and swung the door closed.

Without a word, he grabbed the tray and set it on her lap. “Do you need me to feed you?”

She shook her head and picked up the pot of tea to pour herself a cup. Lifting the hot drink to her lips, it slid down her throat, soothing and warming her insides. “Oh, that is divine.”

“Take a bite of the toast,” he ordered, as he pulled up a chair next to her.

She did as he bid and then took another. “I feel better already. Thank you.”

He jerked his chin. “The kitchen is warming water for a bath. Someone will be up to attend you shortly.”

“Is that Key outside my door?” she asked, meeting his gaze so that she might search his face. “Where are Max and my sisters?”

He looked steadily back at her. “Your mother has left the house. Adelaide and Victoria were of the opinion that they needed to be with your father. Max refused to allow them to return unattended so he went with them. Key is here to chaperone us.”

Her fingers found her ear and gave the lobe a tug. “Chaperone?” Heat infused her cheeks. “I know we’ve been alone but I’ve been…”

“It’s a moot point anyhow.”

That confused her. She wrinkled her brow as she looked up at him. “Why is it moot?”

He grimaced, for just a moment, before his face was a blank mask again.
